Here
we are replacing a rafter, to which the fascia is attached. Many buildings
were built with Oregon, and although it is a very strong timber it
can rot very quickly in wet areas. It is generally replaced with treated
pine these days.
We
like to do our own repairs. That way we can prime all our materials
before they are installed.
We find that it doesnt take that long to seal saw cuts and nail
heads, where rot is most likely to occur.
Even
though our lining boards here are untreated pine, they have all been
painted with Penetrol and treated on both ends before installation.
Replacing
windows can be very expensive. This example shows how it is possible
to repair a rotten window sill and stiles without having to remove
the whole window. Just the glass and the area to be repaired.
This
is the finished job, at approximately a third of the price of a new
window, with no visible sign of any joins.
